WellAware Pipet Navigation Systems use the BioTX Lab Suite software to automate many common laboratory tasks. The BioTX Lab Suite is composed of four software modules: the WellAware module for the actual pipetting, the Protocol module for setting up PCR, sequencing and similar lab protocols, the Norm module for serial dilutions and for normalizing samples into microplates ,and the Labeling module for printing and designing microplate and vial labels. The WellAware Module is designed to use the computer’s text-to-speech voice, sounds, text on the LCD screen, and the LCD monitor’s light under an active vial or well of a microplate to guide an operator through all steps in a pipetting or sorting protocol. The WellAware module is programmed using an Excel (or text) file called an electronic Standard Operating Procedure (eSOP). These eSOP files contain all the pipetting, action or instrument control steps for a lab protocol. The WellAware Module also has an Add Plate graphical user interface that can be used to quickly add sorting or pipetting steps to an eSOP.
The Protocol Module is used to setup protocols like: PCR, ELISA, sequencing, genotyping, real time PCR, rtPCR, qPCR, or any other similar protocol. Protocols are saved with their own protocol definitions, master mix definitions, reagent lists, plate types, pipet orientations, controls, and source to destination plate maps. Protocols may be pipetted directly into 96-Well, 384-Well, Finnzyme Slidetiter™ plates, Corbett GeneDisc™ 72-Well, or 100-Well plates.
Once a protocol is saved, the operator just fills in the sample IDs, reagent lot number info and then:
- prints out the protocol file for their records
- generates a plate map file for the real time instrument (if necessary)
- then generates the eSOP by pressing the respective buttons for each action.
- At this point the operator will open the WellAware module, open the eSOP, and begin pipetting.
The Norm Module may be used with a variety of real time PCR and spectrophotometer instrumentation to normalize samples to a standard concentration in a new destination plate. The Norm Module may also be used for setting up eSOPs for doing serial dilutions. Plate maps of eSOPs may be generated and printed for lab notebooks in the Norm Module.
The Norm Module is designed to pass sample ID information to spectrophotometers and real time instruments and then retrieve the concentration data from the real time PCR instruments and spectrophotometers. Then the operator can use the imported data to normalize all their samples to a user specified concentration.

- SPECTROstar, POLARstar, LUMIstar spectrophotometers from BMG LABTECH
- Multiskan Ascent and Spectrum spectrophotometers from Thermo Scientific
- Varian Eclipse spectrophotometers
- Applied BioSystems 96 and 384-well real time PCR instrumentation
The Labeling Module can print 2D and linear barcodes onto vial or plate labels. Labels can also be designed and modified in this module. The Labeling Module may be used with a variety of label printers to generate vial and plate labels for sample identification. The WellAware Labeling Module can print Code128, 3of9, and Datamatrix barcodes. When the Labeling Module is open it can be setup to automatically print label files generated from the other BioTX Lab Suite Modules.
